The Migration Academy
Every big idea in this course is taught by a recurring animal character who is that migration job. This is their staff room — meet the cast, learn each one’s specialty, and see exactly which lessons they host. Once you know them, the concepts travel with them: spot the elephant and you know it’s time to move data carefully; spot the gremlin and you know a mistake is about to be tempting.
Imagine a little school where each teacher is an animal that’s brilliant at one moving job — a squirrel who makes a list of everything before you pack, a beaver who actually carries and builds, an elephant who never drops the precious boxes, a butterfly who turns old creaky things into shiny new ones, and a turtle who slowly double-checks that nothing broke. When you spot that animal in a lesson, you already know what the lesson is about. Remember the animal, remember the idea.
How the Academy works
☺ Like you’re 10: It’s like a cartoon: the same characters show up in every episode, so you always know who’s who and what they’re good at.
Two little features carry the cast through every lesson:
- “Your hosts for this topic” — a strip at the top of each page tells you which character is hosting, so you know the flavour of the concept before you read a word.
- “🎬 At the Migration Academy” — a short scene where the characters act the concept out. Professor Owl teaches, Foxy asks the question you’re secretly thinking, the host character demonstrates their specialty, Timmy double-checks the result, and Gizmo the Gremlin tries to talk everyone into a shortcut.
Each animal maps to one real migration role. Remember the character and you’ve remembered the concept — discovery, the landing zone, data gravity, the strangler fig, the rollback plan — long after the details fade.
The world: Fort Rusty → Cloudville
☺ Like you’re 10: The whole course is one big moving-day story — out of a drafty old castle and up into a shiny floating city.
The Academy is always working on one project: moving out of Fort Rusty — the creaky on-premises data center, a basement full of machines you own and must fix yourself — and up to Cloudville (Sky City), the cloud, where you rent exactly the rooms you need and the landlord handles the plumbing. AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud are the three big districts of Sky City. In this story, your data is the boxes of belongings, your applications are the family and pets, and your servers are the furniture. Every lesson is one more step of that move.
The core cast
☺ Like you’re 10: These eight are the main crew — you’ll see them again and again, one for each big job a migration needs done.
Professor Owl
Wise and patient — draws the map of the whole move and explains the frameworks. Teaches: foundations, the journey & frameworks, patterns.
Master Panda
Takes it slow and welcomes total beginners — no rush, no jargon. Teaches: the welcome, why we move, taking it slow.
Foxy
Asks the exact question you’re thinking, and sniffs out why a migration went wrong. Teaches: the questions in every scene, the case studies.
Nutty the Squirrel
Makes a list of everything before you pack — inventory, dependency mapping, portfolio assessment, and TCO. Teaches: discovery in the journey, wave planning, the glossary.
Benny the Beaver
Does the actual move — rehost, replatform, relocate — and builds the landing zone with Infrastructure as Code. Teaches: the 7 R’s, moving in waves, the tools, the cloud tracks.
Ellie the Elephant
Never drops a box — moves databases and files safely, keeps them in sync, and respects data gravity. Teaches: data migration, replication, cloud-to-cloud data.
Mira the Butterfly
Turns old creaky apps into shiny new ones — containers, microservices, serverless, refactoring. Teaches: modernization.
Timmy the Turtle
Slow but accurate — tests the move, keeps a rollback plan, and never trusts a cutover until it’s verified. Teaches: anti-patterns, best practices, security & resilience, the checklist.
The supporting cast
☺ Like you’re 10: These friends pop in for a scene whenever their special skill comes up — like guest stars.
| Who | Special skill | Shows up for |
|---|---|---|
| 👺 Gizmo the Gremlin | Trickster — tempts you into shortcuts | Anti-patterns & pitfalls, risky big-bang moves |
| ☁️ Nimbus | The welcoming cloud — your destination | Everywhere the destination appears — Cloudville and its AWS / Azure / Google districts (IaaS/PaaS/SaaS, landing zones) |
| 🏰 Iggy the Iron Server | The nervous legacy system being moved | Legacy apps, the monolith, the strangler fig |
| 🦥 Sol the Sloth | Slow, careful math — cost thinking | TCO, FinOps & pricing models |
| 🐦 Pip the Hummingbird | Fast delivery — the network bridge | Hybrid connectivity (VPN, Direct Connect / ExpressRoute / Interconnect) |

The running story
☺ Like you’re 10: Across the course, the class is really doing one big move together — so each lesson is the next episode of the same show.
The scenes aren’t random. Across the course the Academy plans and runs one real migration out of Fort Rusty: Nutty takes inventory and maps what depends on what, Professor Owl chooses each app’s R and draws the plan, Benny builds the landing zone and carries the furniture over in waves, Ellie moves the data without dropping a byte, Mira rebuilds the creakiest apps to be cloud-native, and Timmy checks every cutover before anyone trusts it — while Gizmo keeps whispering “just move it all tonight, skip the plan.” Follow the Foundations in order and you’ll watch that story unfold.
Foxy: Why do we need a whole zoo to move some computers? Can’t we just copy everything to the cloud tonight and be done?
Timmy the Turtle: That “all in one night” plan has a name, Foxy — big bang — and it’s how you lose the cat and break Grandma’s lamp. Migration isn’t one job; it’s many, done in careful waves.
Nutty the Squirrel: And you can’t move what you haven’t counted. First I make a list of every app and what it secretly depends on. Skip that and you’ll unplug something important by accident.
Benny the Beaver: Once Nutty’s list is ready, I build the new place first — the landing zone — then carry things over a few rooms at a time. Some I lift as-is; some I tweak to fit.
Ellie the Elephant: And I carry the heavy boxes — the data — very slowly and very carefully, keeping a copy in sync until we’re sure the new home works.
Gizmo the Gremlin: Boooring. Just flip the switch! Who needs a backup plan?
Master Panda: Nice try, Gizmo. Curiosity in, panic out — and always a rollback plan. Meet us once here, and you’ll recognise us in every lesson.
Can you name the character for each job — the one who draws the map, the one who takes inventory first, the one who moves & builds, the one who guards the data, the one who transforms old apps, the one who double-checks the cutover, and the one who tempts you into shortcuts? If so, you’ve got a mental hook for every big idea in the course. Now start with What & Why We Move.
