It's entirely knowledge-based: multiple-choice and multiple-response questions, delivered through Pearson VUE at a physical testing center or online via OnVUE proctoring from your own desk. There's no hands-on lab, no CLI, and no cluster to fix — every question is scenario text followed by a list of options, which is exactly why the fine print of how the scoring works matters as much as knowing the services themselves.

How the scoring actually works: scored vs. unscored, and the scaled score

Two details about DOP-C02 scoring trip up more candidates than any actual AWS service does. First: of the 75 questions on your screen, only 65 are scored. The remaining 10 are unscored, unidentified pretest questions — AWS mixing in candidate items it's evaluating for future exam forms, statistically indistinguishable from real questions and scattered throughout the test rather than grouped at the end. You cannot tell which is which, which means the only correct strategy is to treat every single question as if it counts, because ten of them secretly don't and you'll never know which ten.
Second: your result is not "51 out of 65." AWS reports a scaled score from 100 to 1000, and 750 is the passing mark — which is not the same thing as needing 75% raw correct. Scaled scoring exists specifically to make scores comparable across different exam forms that may vary slightly in difficulty; AWS does not publish the exact conversion formula between raw correct-answer count and scaled score, so treat 750 as the target and do not try to reverse-engineer "how many questions can I afford to miss" from it. A pass/fail result appears on screen immediately when you finish at a testing center (online-proctored results may take slightly longer pending review), and a full score report — broken down by domain — typically follows by email within a few business days.
Don't try to budget "misses" against 750 the way you would against a raw percentage — AWS never publishes the raw-to-scaled conversion, and it can shift slightly between exam forms. The only strategy that actually works is the boring one: answer every question, including the ones that feel oddly easy or oddly obscure, because those might be the ten that don't even count.

No domain is small enough to skip — the lightest, Incident & Event Response, is still one question in roughly every seven — but the study-time math is straightforward: D1 (SDLC Automation) alone is worth more than D4 and D5 combined, and D2 (Configuration Management & IaC) and D6 (Security & Compliance) are tied for second at 17% each. Together D1, D2, and D6 are 56% of the exam — over half your score sitting in three domains — which is exactly why the study plan weights its weeks the way it does rather than splitting time evenly across all six.
Registration & proctoring logistics
☺ Like you're 10: You book it online, pick a testing center or a webcam at home, bring a photo ID, and if you fail you have to wait two weeks before trying again.
DOP-C02 is administered by Pearson VUE on AWS's behalf. You register and pay through your AWS Certification account, then choose between a physical testing center appointment or OnVUE online proctoring from a private room of your own. Both require a valid, unexpired, government-issued photo ID whose name matches your registration exactly; online proctoring additionally requires a system check (webcam, microphone, stable connection, and a clear desk with no notes, second monitor, or phone in reach) run well before your slot.
Walk it in order and nothing surprises you on the day:
- Create or sign in to your AWS Certification account and select DOP-C02.
- Choose your delivery method — testing center or OnVUE online proctoring — and pick a time slot.
- Pay the $300 fee; note the cancellation/reschedule policy shown at booking, since changing an appointment too close to the slot typically forfeits the fee.
- If online-proctored, run the system check from your exam dashboard days ahead, not the morning of — a failed check at the last minute can cost you the slot.
- Clear your space for OnVUE: no papers, no second screen, no phone within reach, and a room you can show the proctor on request.
- Bring your ID exactly as registered, arrive or log in early, and complete the proctor's identity and room check before the clock starts.
If you don't pass, AWS requires a 14-day wait before you can retake DOP-C02, and each attempt is a fresh $300 — there's no bundled free retake the way some hands-on exams offer one. Passing any AWS certification typically earns you a discount voucher toward a future AWS exam, which is worth checking your account for before you book your next one. The certification itself is valid for 3 years from your pass date, after which you recertify by retaking the current version of the exam (or an eligible higher-level exam) before it expires.
Don't confuse the reschedule window (how close to your booked slot you can still change it without losing the fee — a matter of hours or days) with the certification validity (how long your pass is good for once you have it — 3 years). One is a booking-desk rule; the other is how long DOP-C02 stays on your resume before you have to prove it again.

- 750, on a scaled range of 100–1000. It isn't a raw percentage because AWS doesn't publish the raw-to-scaled conversion, and scaling exists specifically to account for difficulty differences between exam forms — so "how many can I miss" can't be reverse-engineered from 750.
- D1 — SDLC Automation at 22% is the heaviest single domain. D1 (22%), D2 — Configuration Management & IaC (17%), and D6 — Security & Compliance (17%) together make up 56% of the exam.
